A cooperation of observers: citizen science in the past and today

In the mid-nineteenth century, there was no clear boundary between amateur and professional scientists. Researchers with different backgrounds and training cooperated to collect data. Today, citizens are asked to help scientists classify galaxies or animals. What are the possibilities of citizen science? And what can we learn from its history?
